Avoid working and writing for Content Panel Limited via Skype

The newest scam for freelance writers looking to make some extra dollars on the side comes from someone claiming to be David from Content Panel Limited and hiring via Skype. As you probably know already, very few legitimate agencies are currently hiring via Skype, yet there are still some content managers and small companies that prefer to use Skype to communicate with their writers.

Same old, Same old

If you previously read my article on avoiding SEO Content Hero Agency, then you will be familiar with what I am about to show you. This scammer uses the exact same wording and introduction in the Skype messages, so it might just be the same person or one of his friends.

While I would not be able to tell you for sure who is behind this, one thing is certain: Avoid at all costs, unless you enjoy working for free. This is most probably not the real Content Panel company, and it's the same promise of being paid on the last day of the month based on a signed agreement that uses fictional data and executive names.

What can I do?

We will probably not be able to find the real identity of this scammer too soon since he uses different email addresses, changes names and only communicates via Skype. However, a more intrusive investigation with the help of Cybercrime Police (such as Interpol or FBI) could shed some light in this case of identity theft, usage of unpaid workers and unauthorized use of copyrighted material.

Until the police does its job, I suggest that you do the following:
- Only work through trusted Freelance platforms
- Only work after Escrow deposit is set in place
- Do not believe in signed agreements regardless of how genuine they look

If you still have certain doubts on a client, ask him to send you a photo of his ID and check if the name is the same as the one he mentioned before in the project. If that is not an option, ask to be paid upfront for the first 5 articles via Paypal, and only then start working. This way you will avoid being scammed by the likes of Content Panel Limited.

Update: Is there a legitimate Content Panel website out there?

Seems so (www.thecontentpanel.com) ! I recently discovered it through a Google search and decided to apply as a freelance writer on the platform. Seems like a pretty strict and reputable platform and they claim to pay weekly (every Monday). If they have many clients and are constantly accepting new writers, then I would recommend it. However, as I don't see many reviews of it online, I would suggest attempting the enrolment and doing the bare minimum for one week (e.g. writing 2 high quality articles) to see if they are correct with the payments or not.

I applied on the platform today and I received a message saying that my application will be reviewed in 90 days or more, based on current demand. Now that's a real bummer and one of the reasons they will lose many quality writers, since no one enjoys waiting 3 months or more for their expert team to verify a small profile and a 150-word test assignment. If they are serious about their business, they should have dozens of qualified professionals to review each new profile on a daily basis, and not just few people reviewing profiles manually every couple days. This is a big loss for them.

Avoid working for MoreThanWriters company

There are many writing companies nowadays, and many of them are not serious when it comes to working with freelancers or paying them when the time is due. One such company is MoreThanWriters. They mainly hire through LinkedIn nowadays, and once you accept working for them, they will give you a short writing test to complete (typically one 200-300 words article on a chosen topic).

When the payment is too good to be true..

You are probably aware of the old saying "If something is too good to be true, then it's most likely a scam". Same goes for this company. When I applied to them, their announcement said they are willing to pay up to 16usd per 100 words for articles in Romanian language. As most writers probably know, this is an insane amount of money. Most agencies and clients will not pay such amount unless it's for something highly scientific like a Master Thesis, a Doctoral Thesis or something similar. No one will pay 16usd per 100 words for a simple article.

You may find clients willing to pay 16usd per 1000 words, yet even in this case the articles will need to be in English, free of grammar errors and have quality content inside.

No reviews of the company online

This is another big red flag for the company. They have no online reviews, which is very strange for a company that has been in the market for over 3 years. If they would be serious and paid their freelancers to date while also offering consistent work, then some of them would have surely provided some positive reviews on their own blogs or other guest-posting websites.

I only managed to find one another blog mentioning the company MoreThanWriters, and even that one recommended not to work for them due to lack of reviews and credibility.

Approved and then getting no work

Out of curiosity, I went ahead and completed the qualification process for MoreThanWriters. Once I sent them the test article, they replied to me within 4 days saying I got accepted. But after that, nothing more happened. I waited couple days, one week, two weeks, yet I received no work from them. And this is not the type of website like Upwork or PPH where you apply for projects individually, here they send you work when and if they want.

Bogus invoicing process

Once again, out of curiosity, I sent them an email saying "Hi, I would like to know if there is a minimum payment threshold and how quickly will you pay me". They replied: 1. The platform will take your data information for the invoice from your profile (from the "Payment details” part). Make sure all the information needed is fulfilled and updated to your needs.

2. Once the project is finished and your articles are under the status of "Client", the platform will create your invoice automatically and you will receive an email asking you to accept it. Please check your data and the total amount.
3. Once you accept your invoice, you will be asked to include your invoice number.
4. Invoices will be generated on a monthly basis during the first week of each month.
This is only a small part of their email, yet you can easily spot several grammar errors in their text. In addition, they only claim to be paying via Wise transfer service, which is outdated and very few companies use nowadays (more about that in another article).
I replied to their email with another question and they only got back to me after 14 days with the answer. What serious company does that?

Conclusion

Avoid working and even applying for MoreThanWriters. They are not a serious company and you will only waste your time and effort in the process. Instead, if you really want to go the freelance writer route, choose a website that has many good reviews.

Avoid working for Juan Costa, claiming to be SEO Content Hero Agency

No one likes to work for free, yet this happened to me very recently. I had a contract with Juan Costa, claiming to be the director of SEO Content Hero Agency. I found his contact details through a portal for freelancers that are looking for work, so I said to myself: Why not? I was not active in the freelance copywriting environment as of late, so I thought that writing some quality articles in exchange for some money would only do me right.

Promises of good payment

Just as I contacted the client (presumably Juan Costa) through Skype, he sent me a contract that had all the details, company's website, address and telephone number, plus his signature. Everything seemed legitimate, so I decided to sign it as well, send it back and start working. I should have been more cautious, I should have asked for a photo of his ID and I should have tried to contact the business via their website to confirm the details. I did none of the above and decided to go with good faith, something which should never be done in an online-only environment.

Juan was supposed to pay me 5$ per 100 words on each article, and he told me this would only be the beginning, since in subsequent months the payments would increase up to 10$ per 100 words. This is an excellent rate since I normally charge only 1$ per 100 words for standard articles and 2$ per 100 words for more complex articles.

Working almost everyday for couple hours

The contract stated that I have to complete 3 - 4 articles per day, on a wordcount decided by the client. It was not that difficult since most articles only needed 300 to 350 words, yet I had to do quite some researches since the vast majority of these articles were about U.S. cities and counties which I knew nothing about.

Occasionally I would have to write longer articles, of 700 words or 1000 words, but when such articles came to the workflow I only completed about 2 per day and Juan was okay with that. Overall, in the 2 weeks that I worked for this guy, I wrote 32 articles from scratch.

When payment day comes but the payment never arrives

According to the contract, payment had to be made on the last day of each month. When March 31st arrived, I contacted him and sent him an invoice with the articles that I wrote for him, their wordcount, and the total amount that I was supposed to receive. He assured me that the payment is in processing and I should receive it by PayPal shortly.

The day was over and I received no such payment. I contacted him again by Skype, he seemed confused and asked me to re-send the invoice as the payment is still processing. I asked him for more work (articles) but he didn't reply to this question. I waited the entire day (this was on a Friday), but nothing happened on my Paypal. As the weekend came, I abandoned the chat and returned to it on Monday.

I confronted him about not receiving the payment and I asked for the entire amount I was owed + 6% penalty for the delay. Once again, he told me that the payment is still being processed, so I asked him how long can such process take when PayPal payments are instant?!? After that, he apparently blocked me as the Skype status showed for him ("Last seen - few days ago"). I tried calling him on the number shown in the contract but it seemed that the number was deactivated.

What to do in such case?

In my mind, the business was legitimate and I had a contract with this guy, so I decided to send an email through the contact form available on SEO Content Hero. They replied to me the same day telling me that I have no invoice with them and that they only hire U.S.-based copywriters. In that moment, my whole world crashed. Besides, the guy who replied to me was Joe Graisbery, director of SEO Content Hero, and he told me that there is no Juan Costa working with his company.

Conclusions

I have no evidence as to how honest the company SEO Content Hero is and I also found no reviews of them online. If you are looking forward to working with them, I would proceed with extra caution. The guy who scammed me could be one of their competitors or a former employee with a fake digital name, yet the company has no address on their Contact page, nor a phone number. Therefore, anyone can present a fake contract and claim to be SEO Content Hero. Until reviews shed some light on this matter, I recommend to stay away from Juan Costa or SEO Content Hero Agency.

If you must really work for them, make sure it's on a freelance platform that provides Escrow (Security) Deposit so that you know you'll get your money, and also check if the deposit has been made before starting the work. Otherwise, there are no guarantees. Take me for example, I was owed 823$, yet I never got them.

Plastic in produs

The new Weather&News taskbar feature in Windows 10 is awesome

I will be honest with you, the first time I read about Microsoft introducing a weather&news feature in the taskbar I was quite skeptical about it. I mean, I already had quick access to the dedicated News app and to the dedicated Weather app just by clicking the start button in taskbar.

But boy was I wrong! I had recently installed the latest optional update for Windows 21H1, which comes with the taskbar weather&news functionality. In my head, I wouldn't have seen it as something practical, but that took a 360 turn once I saw it being there with my own eyes. It's perfect!

Why is this taskbar widget so useful?

I no longer have to unlock my smartphone or open my room's window to see current weather conditions. Now I can take a quick glance at my laptop's screen while dressing up, so that I never have to wear again shorts when it's about to rain or wear heavy jeans when the temperature outside is 30C+.

Going further than the Weather

The built-in News app of Windows 10 is very useful and entertaining, but it's also quite complicated to set up and browse through. However, with the help of this little widget, you no longer have to interact with the standalone News app. Now you can just hover your mouse or click on the weather widget and you will see the hottest recent news from various sources such as National Geographic, MSN, plus traffic information for your area, stock market details and many more. It's truly a blessing.

Top international news

Right now I just came across a News headlight that read "Autonomous Robots already started killing people in wars" and thought to myself "Oh boy, we kind of got too far". Oh yes, and you can react to News articles with various emojis including Anger, Surprise or Upset.

Final words

I can see this new Windows 10 widget being extremely useful for anyone out there, even for those who are only beginners regarding English language. Being able to see temperature, weather conditions and traffic information in your taskbar is truly excellent to have.

I noticed some people having issues with this recent update, so if you know that your laptop struggled with updates in the past, I suggest waiting few months before installing this update. But if you never had update issues or your laptop is relatively new (1-2 years old), then I definitely recommend installing this new optional update.

Please note that you will have to first install Feature Update to 21H1, and only after that you will see an Optional Cumulative Update for 21H1. This last optional cumulative update is the one your laptop needs to display weather and news in taskbar. Some laptop models and countries are not supported yet, so if you don't see it, then you will have to wait for a while more.

Microsoft suggests there is a problem with your web browser - there isn't one!

I was recently playing with the settings on my Windows 10 laptop when I noticed something which initially seemed abnormal. Under Web Browsing, right when I opened Settings, my Windows said: Restore recommended.

Normally, when you see a message like that, you start worrying. You will ask yourself questions such as: What is wrong with my browser, did it get corrupted, am I being attacked by malware? Fortunately, it's none of these. Microsoft is just trying to push its browser and search engine to more and more people, especially since the new Chromium engine update of the browser.

If you choose to click the attention-seeking icon, Windows will prompt you to Restore Microsoft Edge and Bing as default due to privacy purposes. However, there shouldn't be any privacy issues if you are using a renowned browser like Opera or Chrome (although some may argue that Chrome and Google don't have the best privacy, they actually do if you take the time to arrange settings).

In conclusion, I advise you to continue using your preferred browser regardless of the warnings or messages that Microsoft (Windows) may give you. If your browser is working fine, then you probably used it to save many of your favourite bookmarks, passwords and so on. In such case, it would be a hassle to move to Edge at this point just based on the recommendation of default. However, you should consider Edge if you are having issues with battery life or performance as Edge seems to be very well tuned in its latest form.

How to Use Jigs for Bass Fishing

Bass jigging is not for everyone, but if you are looking forward to learning it, you will get all your information from our article.

Vertical jigging is useful when fishing in deep water, as well as near the bottom. It is also useful when in open water. You will see spectacular results with this technique when the fish is thickened or in schools. This is common with pure oysters and hybrids, white bass, carp, bass and shovel, as well as other species. In this article we are going to focus on using jigs for bass fishing.

Lead-heads and teaspoons

Vertical jigging can be done by using lead devices and metal spoons. The former may have bodies or hooks that are coated with hair (especially bucktail or marabou) or a soft plastic form or a combination of both, such as a bucktail plus plastic tail.

A warning in the use of soft plastic bodies is that their tail shape must be active when the movement goes up and down, which is not the case for many, as they only show up when they are pulled out horizontally. Another clarification is that you must avoid tangling on the hook point, on the head or on the thigh of the jig; some styles or lengths of soft plastic fail way too often during vertical use.

Metal jigging spoons are very different from spoons used for trolling or “cast-and-recover” fishing. They are rather lateral, compact and cylindrical. They are heavy, sink quickly and are almost useless for casting and recovery (or trolling).

As a category, such bait are called jigging spoons. Many people, myself included, who do a lot of vertical fishing, prefer spoons over the lead ends.

When using both, you are fishing close to the bottom or to a certain depth. Keeping the attraction as close to the bottom as possible will help detect mistakes and set hooks and help avoid hangars.

Using Sonar

It is almost essential and, at least extremely beneficial, to use a sonar device while jigging vertically. If you have a correct adjustment, you can see the fish below and see your attraction (or at least the one that is attracted to the cone of the sonar transducer). You can see when you are directly over the fish, and when you have passed through them. Using sonar in combination with an electric motor (especially a sonar with on-site anchoring function) means you can keep your boat and bait directly over the fish.

Determining the degree of depth

If you know how deep to fish, then you can leave the desired length of line and start jigging. Never reel in any line and start paying the line only if you start to drift. Here's a way to know how much you let go: twist the device to the tip of the rod, glue the tip of the rod to the surface, release the cutting device, and raise the tip of the rod to eye level; then stop the jig from falling. If the eye level is six feet above the surface, your jig will now be 6 meters deep. Lower the tip of the rod to the surface and proceed again. Now you've left 12 meters of line. Continue until the desired length is stopped.

With a level wind-drum, which has a free-rotating guideline, you can measure the amount of line that is released with each side-to-side movement of the line guide; multiply this amount each time the guide moves back and forth.

If you use a spool that does not have such a guide, you can detach the line on the spool with one-foot increments (or 18 inches) until the desired length is stopped. Another method is to count the attractive attraction.

Vertical jigging technique

For some vertical jigging, you may need to let your bait fall to the bottom and then jig it up to the surface a foot or two at a time. Bring the grip to the bottom and the drum to the feet. Then jig it there three or four times before recovering a few more line legs and jigging often. Repeat this until the shelter is close to the surface. The only problem here is that you usually don't know exactly how deep a fish is when you catch one and you can't clear the right line and get to the right level again.

Sometimes the best tactic is to leave the bait at the bottom, let it there for an hour or two, then quickly twist it with two or three turns of the handle and turn it back down.

Other times you can try jigging for a while or two near the bottom, drum a few feet and jig again a few times, then drum up a few meters more and repeat, finally drop the bait at the bottom and repeating this. Try to see what works best for you, but understand that virtually all strikes occur when the shelter revives while jigging it up (a few appear when you straighten your bait up).

Whenever the angle of your fishing line in the water moves away from its vertical position, rotate it and lower it again. You may need to use a heavier attraction to reach that upright position, although it is generally better to use the lightest weight attraction that will do the job. A low visibility-line or leader with small dimensions is also advantageous for this fishing. The microfilament line is especially good due to its thin nature and sensitivity, although you will need a low leader attached to the rod.

                          FAQs

·         Do you put bait on a jig?

Yes, it is possible to tip the jigs with live bait or even plastics which prove to be very useful in this regard. It’s very important to look at the jig head and take into consideration whether you are fishing in open water or deep water when choosing your bait.

·         What color jig is best for bass?

I advise going for black and blue. These colors offer the ultimate visibility for bass, as they have strong contrast and are visible from a large distance by loner bass as well as schools. We advise using black-and-blue jig in low light conditions, around vegetation, as well as in dirty water.

·         What size jig should I use for bass?

You should use 1/2oz and 3/8oz in almost every case. However, there are few certain situations when lighter or heavier jigs will be better suited. Take into account that a lighter style works well in shallow water, whereas heavier ones will work very well in deep water.

·         What does a jig bite feel like?

The sensation will vary a lot from case to case. Sometimes, bites on a jig will feel like a slight tick, while other times you may feel the like a sharp thump in the rod handle. You will notice that at certain times the line will start moving to the side, while other times it will come with full-throttle straight at you. This is a good indication of the fish quality.

·         Where do you throw a jig for bass?

It will work very well in deep water, but you can also see some good results in open, less shallow water.

·         Do I need a sinker with a jig head?

Yes, you will need a weighted jig head or a sinker when fishing for bass. This is needed as you want your bait to go at the bottom and stick there. The weight of this sinker will depend on several factors, including lure size, water depth, wind velocity and current speed.

·         Can you jig from shore?

Yes, this is actually one of the easiest and most effective ways of catching bass. Choose artificial bait or even live bait, but make sure it sticks at the bottom of the water column.
