Should you work on Scribie.com ? Most probably not!
The Scribie.com website has recently caught my eye as I was looking for an extra part-time revenue source. Being a copywriter with over 6 years of experience, I thought it will be very easy for me and it will allow me to work comfortably from home. It wasn't at all like this, and I want to tell you why.
When you first create an account on Scribie.com they will tell you that you can make between 10 and 25usd per hour but that is as fake as it can be. In fact, you have to transcribe 6-minute audio files for them and they will only pay you (attention!), 1usd per each. Such transcription will take you around 25-30minutes if you can type fast, and 1 hour if you type slow. So, in all honesty, you will only earn 1 to 3usd per hour. This will only be enough to buy a coffee or a hotdog, so it's up to you whether it's worth your time or not.
Another thing that you should take into consideration is that they manually approve each account once it's created. This means that they can reject you straight away for whatever reason (e.g.: you are not in their preferred location, you don't have experience in writing/transcribing, your English is not good enough, etc). And even if they approve your account, you still have to prove your worth through a test. You have to transcribe a 6-minute audio file!
I want to tell you that this test is extremely hard, and the ones who review your transcriptions will most likely be unfair with you (at least in my case, they were). You will struggle with the accents and background noise in the registrations, but that is the smallest issue that you have. Let me tell you about my experience and how my test was corrected.
"How long do you guys go into the fall?
It runs through 8 months.
A bit more cold in there."
This is what I typed based on the audio which I listened to for 2 times. And they cut entirely. Now, here's what they replaced it with:
"You are very short into the season. How long do you guys go into the fall?
It runs through November, so 8 months.
It will get a little more cold in there before the end of the time."
So it basically says the same thing, only that they added some words which in all honesty don't seem to appear in the recording. I want to remind you that I've listened to the recording entirely for 2 times before submitting it. They also seem to have some weird auto-editor which tells you that there are mistakes in your text yet fails to point any of them.
My advice for you is to stay away from this site called Scribie.com. You will be able to get better paying and more interesting projects on sites like UpWork and Freelancer, and they don't request you to do test transcriptions and drafts before being approved. Keep in mind that even if you are approved on Scribie, 1 - 3usd per hour is a laughable amount in most countries, so you will probably be better off just getting a part time job in your area.
PS: I want to tell you that UpWork and Freelancer also have their impurities and you can't rely on them 100%, but I will talk about that in another article. Bookmark and keep an eye on my blog to read it.
